Peter S. Sebel, M.B. B.S., Ph.D., M.B.A., born in London, England, graduated from the University of London’s King’s College Hospital Medical School, in 1974, with a degree in Medicine. In 1978, he completed a Fellowship with the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Surgeons (FFARCSI), in Ireland, followed by a Ph.D., in 1986, from the University of Amsterdam. His thesis was entitled “Fentanyl Anaesthesia in Cardiac Surgery.” Dr. Sebel came to the United States, in 1985, during a sabbatical at Duke University, and later joined the faculty of Emory University School of Medicine, in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1987. In 1998, he received his M.B.A. degree, also from Emory.
Currently Dr. Sebel is full Professor of Anesthesiology, and has served as Vice Chair for Education of the Emory University’s Department of Anesthesiology. He also holds an appointment as Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Emory College.
Dr. Sebel has over 100 peer-reviewed journal publications to his credit, as well as 3 books and 25 book chapters. Dr. Sebel’s primary research focus is memory and awareness in anesthesia. He is considered one of the world’s experts in this area. He has organized 33 postgraduate conferences, and serves on a variety of advisory panels, boards and committees. He lives in Atlanta, Georgia.
